If you want to learn about history and World War II, you should talk to Callan. According to his mother, he has always had a big fascination for history and especially World War II history. When Callan’s wish granting volunteers visited him to see what his wish would be, it only took him a few minutes before it was made very clear that he wished to visit the real historical D-Day sites in Normandy, France.
On a very special trip to the World War II museum in New Orleans, LA, Callan was told, with veterans from all of branches of the military around him, that his wish would come true! Callan spoke to veterans from all branches of the armed forces. He learned about their real experiences from different events they had been through in their lifetimes. On his wish reveal day, Callan and his friends even got to experience what it would be like to be a real soldier. When it was time to pack up and fly off to have his wish come true, Callan rode in a special VIP school bus on his way to the airport. After Callan and his family arrived in France, they had a special surprise waiting for them. Callan and his family got to be the special guests of U.S. Ambassador to Paris, Ambassador Charles Rivkin, for a performance of the U.S. Marine Corps Battle Color Detachment.
Among the many sites that Callan got to visit on his adventure into history, some of them included Sainte Mere-Eglise Church, Airborne Museum Utah Beach, Leclerc Monument/Bunkers, Point du Hoc, US Military Cemetery, and Colleville-sur-Mer, Omaha Beach, Musée Mémorial de la Bataille de Normandie, Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux, Longues Battery, D-Day Landings Museum, Mulberry Harbor, and the Caen Memorial.
Then the day came that Callan had been waiting for his whole life.... Callan made it to the beaches at Normandy, France. Callan had a moment in history, which he had been dreaming about, come to life. Callan’s wish came true on June 6, 2010, which happened to be the 66th anniversary of D-Day. This was such an incredible day for Callan and his family. This whole trip gave Callan and his family an opportunity to forget about the doctor visits and medical bills. Instead they made memories that would last them a lifetime.
