Avelyn and her family would plan their future trips as a way to get through some of the most trying times. Her wish to visit the Neuschwanstein Castle was born during this time period, and now has been made a reality! Born in Germany, Avelyn was ready and excited to get to experience all of the wonderful things she had heard about her birthplace.
When Avelyn was referred to Make-A-Wish with medulloblastoma, she knew right away what she was going to wish for. When she was originally visited by her wish-granters, Sandra and Dalton, she promptly stated that she wanted to travel to Germany and visit Neuschwanstein Castle. She was particularly interested in visiting this castle because she had seen it for years, even before diagnosis, in the form of her favorite Christmas tree ornament, which often sits in her room.
Leading up to her wish, she would ask daily if she would get to see snow, but no promises could be made without knowing the weather ahead of time. She would jump up and down as the countdown to traveling to Germany began – a task that isn’t easy for Avelyn to accomplish after treatment, but she did it anyways!
Avelyn and her younger sister were born in Germany while her father was stationed there; however, they were so young and barely remembered it. She was very eager to go back to Germany after all of the wonderful stories her family told her about it.
When asked about Avelyn’s favorite parts of the wish, her mom stated, “Avelyn was so very excited to finally see Neuschwanstein Castle after years of dreaming about it. As we drove closer, she leapt to the other side of the bus to get a better view. And once we finally stood on the bridge that overlooked the castle, she was in awe of the view. On that bridge, she happily said, ‘my wish came true!’”On her first flight, the flight attendants noticed Avelyn’s shirt and paused to talk with the family awhile. The family was then invited to visit the cockpit of the plane, where they gifted Avelyn with a wishing bell from Thailand from a previous trip.
Avelyn enjoyed her time in Germany and all of the sights and food it entailed. They enjoyed schnitzel and spätzle for dinner in Munich, all while surrounded by traditional German music. They also spent a day at Hellabrunn Zoo, drove to Garmish, and saw snow while in Zugspitze!
“Words cannot describe how grateful we are for this opportunity to make new and happy memories with our entire family. There were so many moments on the trip where we forgot about the struggles and uncertainties of the past two years and just enjoyed being together. Other times, Adam or I would catch a glimpse of Avelyn smiling ear to ear or running through the fall leaves with Amelia and Peter and we’d thank God all over again for healing our little girl in so many ways. We are so appreciative to Make-A-Wish for making Avelyn’s BIG wish come true and making it possible for us to fulfill the promise to get her to Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany.” – Laura, Avelyn’s Mom.
